In short

Creator marketing is the practice of working with independent content creators as an ongoing content and commerce channel. It differs from one-off influencer buys because creators are selected on audience fit and conversion evidence, briefed to keep their own voice, compensated through fees and commissions, and measured individually so the roster improves each cycle.

How to evaluate a creator

Follower count is the least useful selection signal available. More predictive indicators are audience geography, category affinity, comment substance, and whether the creator has previously produced content that led to purchases.

  • Audience location matched to the markets you sell in.
  • Comment quality: questions about the product beat generic praise.
  • Consistency of posting and format discipline.
  • Evidence of past commerce content — affiliate links, codes, live selling.
  • Brand safety and category conflicts.

Writing briefs creators can work with

The brief should fix what must be true — the message, mandatory claims, disclosure, offer and deadline — and leave format, hook and delivery to the creator. Over-specified briefs produce content that reads as an advertisement and performs like one.

Paying creators

Three models are common in the region: flat fee, commission only, and a hybrid of base fee plus commission. The hybrid is usually the most workable, because it covers production cost while aligning incentives with sales. Paid usage rights should be negotiated separately and explicitly when you intend to amplify the content.

Measuring creator performance

Give every creator a unique link or code. Report cost per acquisition, click-through rate, landing page conversion and paid amplification performance at creator level. Averages across a campaign hide the fact that a small subset usually produces most of the result.

Scaling a creator programme

Scale by retention rather than volume. Keeping the creators who perform, increasing their scope, and replacing only the bottom of the roster each cycle compounds far better than recruiting an entirely new set of creators for every campaign.

Common questions

How many creators should a first campaign use?
Ten to twenty well-matched creators usually produces enough performance data to decide who to scale, which is more useful than a large untested roster.
Is UGC the same as influencer marketing?
No. UGC is content produced for the brand to use in its own channels, usually without the creator publishing it. Influencer marketing buys distribution to the creator's audience. Many programmes use both.
